Course Overview
This workshop course runs for three days and provides delegates with sufficient knowledge and skills to understand the concepts and philosophy that underpin effective SMS, in addition to the specific documentation mandated by regulations.
Primarily, the course emphasises the practical aspects of SMS and the tools with which an organsiation can develop, implement and maintain an effective system.
The course provides an overview of the requirements for a State Safety Programme together with an Organisations’ Safety Management System, Just Culture, Hazard Identification and Risk Management principles, Safety Assurance, Safety Performance Indicators and Safety Promotion. The course will use case based studies throughout, to apply a practical aspect to the theory learned.

- Competent Authority Inspectors responsible for oversight of the Safety Management Systems of Air Operators and Aircrew Training Organisations;

- Anyone with an interest in learning about Safety Management Systems, and how they are devloped, managed and regulated.
Learning Objectives
To provide the delegate with an overview of both the ICAO and EASA methodologies regarding the development, implementation and maintenance of an effective Safety Management System as required by ICAO Annex 19 and the related EU Management System requirements.
On completion of the course, the delegate will be able to:
- Develop an organisation’s Safety Policy and Objectives
- Identify and select the required components of an Effective SMS
- Use appropriate tools and develop compliant procedures to ensure adequate Hazard identification and Safety Risk Asessment techniques.
- Develop Safety Assurance Programmes
- Ensure effective Safety Promotion (training, education and communication) within their organisation
Prerequisites
A background in aviation with current or prospective management, investigator or competent authority inspector responsibilities;
No previous experience in Safety Management is necessary;
The ability to understand and converse in English is also a requirement;
