It will provide an overview of the various management system standards available to operators and managers with responsibility for establishing management systems certification aiming to demonstrate the company’s success in managing environmental issues.

Course Overview

The course recognises and responds to the dynamic airport environment where several key service providers may have to facilitate integration of individual environmental issues and management systems to ensure a safe and environmentally sensitive operational environment. The importance of managing the environment within the aviation industry is the focal point of the course.

To provide participants with a good understanding of the basic principles of environmental management in the aviation sector and how to develop the processes and requirements of a management system capable of achieving certification to a required standard.  The course focuses on ISO 14001 as a framework but also considers other standards available to the industry such as the process of development, implementation and verification of effectiveness of such systems in the context of the need to satisfy the relevant regulations and requirements of interested parties.

The training course will comprise a series of linked modules and aims to facilitate a high degree of attendee participation through the use of Syndicate Exercises, group discussion and practical activities based around a fictitious case study airport organisation.

Course Topics

The course adopts a modular approach and addresses ISO 14001, EMAS, Green Dragon and other standards.

Module 1 – the contextual position

  • The legislative framework (UK and EU based environmental regulation, EASA rules and ICAO Annex 16)
  • Context of the organisation required by clause 4 of the standard
  • How to identify the interested parties and their needs and expectations

Module 2 – Identifying the risks

  • Identification of key aspects for typical organisations
  • Creating an Aspects and Legal Register
  • Creating improvement processes and plans of action.
  • Establishing a policy and gaining support from Leaders in the organisation

Module 3 – Resource, Training and Communication

  • Ensuring sufficient resources in particular the financials
  • Developing a Training Matrix
  • Ensuring adequate communications strategy

Module 4 – Operating procedures

  • Establishing adequate controls of the operation ensuring these cover the Key Aspects and may include the some of the following:
    • Emissions to air
    • Noise emissions
    • Emissions to wate
    • Waste Management
    • Landscape Management
  • Need for Monitoring

Module 5 – Checking and Review of Performance

  • What should be covered in the Internal Audit programme
  • Management Review processes
  • Need for Corrective Action management

Module 6 – Which Standard & Certification

  • Choosing the appropriate Certification Body
  • The certification process
