Course Overview
The course recognises and responds to the dynamic airport environment where several key service providers may have to facilitate integration of individual environmental issues and management systems to ensure a safe and environmentally sensitive operational environment. The importance of managing the environment within the aviation industry is the focal point of the course.
To provide participants with a good understanding of the basic principles of environmental management in the aviation sector and what needs what needs to be added to a management system to ensure the environment is managed effectively. The course also considers the process of development, implementation and verification of effectiveness of such systems in the context of the need to satisfy the relevant regulations and requirements of interested parties.
The training course will comprise a series of linked modules and aims to facilitate a high degree of attendee participation through the use of Syndicate Exercises, group discussion and practical activities based around a fictitious case study airport organisation.

Course Topics
The course covers the following:
- The legislative framework (UK and EU based environmental regulation, EASA rules and ICAO Annex 16)
- Identification of key aspects for typical organisations
- Discussions and practical exercises covering:
- Emissions to air (including exhausts from ground and air vehicles)
- Noise emissions (ground running and noise certification)
- An overview climate change concerns
- Emissions to water (operation of balancing ponds and reed beds)
- Emissions to ground (e.g. spills etc.)
- Waste handling – hazardous waste, recycling, etc
- Landscape Management
- Chemical use
- Winterisation processes (de-icing, anti-icing and snow clearance)
- Microplastic problems
- Rubber deposits on runways
The course adopts a modular approach and addresses sources of these issues, various possible methods of control & reduction and the current process of control and mitigation of the issues discussed. Syndicate exercises are used to re-inforce understanding.
Module1: Legislative Background and aspects development.
Providing an introduction to UK, EU and International Environmental Law, and the Key environmental aspects associated with Aviation industry.
Module 2: Reviewing emissions to air
This will include a brief overview of climate change issues and the impact of “Contrails.
Reviewing air emissions from ground-based plant including support vehicles, fixed and mobile plant.
Module 3: Noise Management and other associated issues from Aircraft Operations
Sources of noise and vortices on departure and arrival of aircraft. Management and control of ground running of aircraft engines and impact on the local communities
Module 4: Chemical and Waste Water Management
Discussions on chemical storage and use and consideration of liquid disposal and control from aviation operations including the operation of balancing ponds
Module 5: Waste Segregation, storage and management
Discussion on centralisation of waste collection, segregation within the aviation environment
Module 6: Landscaping Issues
Review on landscape design; the do’s and don’ts of grass management in the control of birds on an aerodrome, managing ingress and control of pests such as deer birds and other fauna
Module 7: Winterisation management (Optional for clients in colder climates)
Discussions on aircraft de-icing, runway and apron ice control, snow clearance and managing the disposal of contaminated bi-products of the winter controls
Module 8: Clearing Rubber and micro-plastics from Runway clearance
The Management on runway cleaning processes and management of microplastics from the environment
