Course Overview

As stated within ICAO Doc. 9981 PANS Aerodromes, aerodrome operators should provide a follow-me (leader vehicle) service to lead aircraft when requested.  This involves preparing a suitable vehicle, equipment and route for escorting the aircraft. This also involves following  aircraft escorting procedures at all times, whilst adhering to the relevant legal requirements and maintaining the safety of other airside users. You must be able to ensure that you have the correct documentation to drive airside, and escort the aircraft safely, use signs and signals to communicate with the flight deck crew to safely escort the aircraft, and follow radiotelephony procedures. You must know and understand low visibility, adverse weather and emergency procedures. This is especially relevant when operations occur at night or in low visibility conditions. To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aerodrome there may be times when escorting of vehicles may be an appropriate and necessary control measure, such as when contractors are working airside and/or when external emergency services need to reach an accident/incident scene.
